The weekend we have all been waiting for is finally upon us. Tomorrow afternoon, CIRIUS Fitness Ice Hockey will travel down to the Canadian Hockey Enterprises May Tournament in Atlantic City, NJ. Our team will consist of a mix of players, the majority coming from the CIRIUS team with some key additions: Michael Korsyn (Maryland), Ryan Wolfinger (Maryland), George Fischer (Maryland), and Steven Cirincione (New York). They will join Brendan Keelen, Joe Cirincione, Rob Susca, Keith Meyers, Eric Fischer, Will Hanley, and Jay Moye to form our 2014 Tournament Team.
CIRIUS will be playing within the C Division in the 25+ Age Group. They will face off against teams from Baltimore, Connecticut, and Ontario, Canada. The tournament will be played in a round-robin style giving the team three guaranteed games and the opportunity to play in the championship game if they qualify.
Their schedule will be as follows:
Game 1 – Friday May 16th @ 8:40 PM
Game 2 – Saturday May 17th @ 12:40 PM
Game 3 – Saturday May 17th @ 8:40 PM
Championship – Sunday May 18th @ 11:00 AM
We had the opportunity to catch up with newcomer Michael Korsyn and asked him a few questions regarding the big weekend in Atlantic City.
Q - What are your expectations for the AC tournament?
A - "I'm excited. I'm looking forward to getting back out on the ice with a few former teammates and looking to rekindle some of the magic we experienced in the past. We won a league championship and led the league in points as a line. We then went and succeeded in Las Vegas, our line leading the division in points, scoring clutch goals, and ultimately falling in overtime of the championship game. I would love to avenge that loss here in Atlantic City."
Q - What are your thoughts on playing for CIRIUS Fitness?
A - "I'm looking forward to it. They seem like a deep team with a great pedigree. They can roll several lines, hold opponents off the score sheet, they can compete with the best of 'em. So yeah, I am excited to be part of the team. And maybe I can get some help in my own recovery from a knee injury a few months back. They have to have at least one trainer on the team right?!"
Q - Will you have to make any adjustments to your game?
A - "I don't think so. I try to play a pretty simple game. It all starts in your own end. Control the space in front of your own net, keep the opponent out of the scoring areas, take away their time and space, you can build off that and move down the ice. Ken Daneyko, one of the all-time great New Jersey Devils and honorary CIRIUS Captain, had a lot of success at the NHL level by simplifying his game and focusing on the defensive zone. I don't think you can find a better example than a three-time Stanley Cup champion. So I will just try play my game, use the chemistry I have with some of my former teammates, and play hard every shift to try to bring home the Atlantic City Cup. Playing these types of tournaments is always fun...but it's always better when you win."
As our CIRIUS Fitness Ice Hockey Team heads to Atlantic City on Friday afternoon, we will all be anxiously awaiting the results of their first contest that night. We wish them the best of luck and hope they bring us home
